4to. 11.25 x 8.75 inches. 213 pp. Bound in original quarter orange cloth, gilt, over grey cloth. Slight damage to edges of p.100-102; otherwise a very good copy. Printed ownership label on contents page. Illustrated by 77 colour, by 106 monochrome plates and by text figure. John White (1539-c.1593) was an explorer and cartographer, who served as colonial governor of Walter Raleigh's failed colony of Roanake Island, Virginia, in 1587. He had previously accompanied the 1585 New World expedition. These illustrations include the earliest depictions of the Eastern seaboard native inhabitants encountered by the first English settlers and also feature oriental and European portraits and views of the wildlife. By Paul Hulton (1918-90), formerly of the British Museum, 1951-81, whose print room houses White's surviving works (Ground Zero Books Ltd. website).
