8vo. 8.5 x 5.5 inches. 280 pp. Main text in Latin and English parallel double columns. Bound in full calf; spine in compartments with raised bands. Gilt dentelles. Extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine. Joints starting to crack and some browning of flyleaves; otherwise a very good copy. Decorated by head and tailpiece vignettes and by initials. Teaching edition of the De Vita Excellentium Imperatorum of Cornelius Nepos (c.110-25 BC), a Roman biographer and historian, who came from near Verona. The only surviving major work of Cornelius Nepos, this is a work of collective biography, with accounts of twenty five political leaders, historians, orators, etc., principally Greek, and the addition of the Carthaginian generals, Hamilcar and Hannibal; only two Romans appear, Cato and Atticus. The text also includes the Life of Cornelius Nepos by Joannes Vossius, and some fragments from his other writings. A very popular textbook, first published in 1723, by John Clarke (1687-1734), schoolmaster and classical scholar born in York (ESTC T83015).
