12mo. 3.5 x 5.5 inches. 196 pp. Text in French. Bound in half black morocco over marbled boards. A little wear to extremities and scattered foxing but otherwise a very good copy. Gift inscription to Eleanor D. Partridge, 1826 on front pastedown, 1948 signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated by engraved title and 7 engraved plates. An attractive early nineteenth century edition of the Fables of Francois Fenelon (1651-1715), theologian and writer, who served as Archbishop of Cambrai, 1695-1715. The Fables were originally composed for the education of the Duke of Burgundy (eldest son of the Dauphin), to whom F?n?lon was tutor. He is best known for his Adventures of Telemachus, an attack on the divine right absolute monarchy, as exemplified by Louis XIV.
