8vo. 8.75 x 5.75 inches. xii + 158 pp. Bound in original navy cloth, gilt, with contrasting blue spinal title label, gilt, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper, with a few small chips at head of spine, which is sunned. Edges foxed, but otherwise a very good copy. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. The Navy Board handled the civil administration of the Navy until 1832, including the purchase of supplies by contract and, to some extent, shipbuilding. Notable members of the Board were Samuel Pepys, Clerk of the Acts and later Secretary to the Admiralty, and Lord Barham, First Lord of the Admiralty at the time of Trafalgar. Some of this material had already appeared in The Mariners' Mirror and History Today. Bernard Pool served as Director of Navy Contracts in the Contract and Purchase Department of the Admiralty from 1948-60 and was Hon. Treasurer of the Navy Records Society, 1960-71.
