8vo. 9 x 6 inches. [vi] + 426 pp. Bound in green cloth with gilt decorate spine. Rough cut edges. Flyleaves browned and page edges foxed and sometimes touching on margins; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 22 engraved plates, including frontispiece and vignette title. A work of fiction on the Plague and Great Fire of London, by William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-1882), romantic novelist. This edition is illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne (Phiz) (1815-820 (the frontispiece and vignette title) and by John Franklin (fl.1800-61) (the twenty text plates) (The Victorian Web website). The edition appears to be one of a set of Ainsworth's novels published in 1898 by the Waverley Book Company. The first edition was published in 1841 in three volumes.
