FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8.5 x 5.5 inches. 15 pp. + [1] pp. colophon. In green card wrapper with black titles. Extremities worn, with some staining and sunning, otherwise a very good copy. Scarce first edition of a verse published privately and anonymously. With Rome replacing Oxford as the target of criticism, it is an accomplished and successful reinvention of the third satire of the Roman poet, Juvenal (Decimus Junius Juvenalis, c.55-128). The second edition of 1922 is signed by G. H. and this has led to the author's identification as Geoffrey Howard (1889-1973). Later a barrister, Howard was, at the time of the composition of Oxford A Satire, a Modern History undergraduate of Christ Church, Oxford (Lugubelinus website).
