FIRST UK EDITION. 8vo. 7.75 x 5.25 inches. [vi] + 84 pp. + [4] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original dark blue cloth, gilt. rough cut edges. A little wear to extremities and some foxing of edges and interior at front and back; otherwise a very good copy. Inscription on first free endpaper 1917. Illustrated by colour frontispiece. Decorated by publisher's device on verso of half title. A popular collection of 326 thoughts and epithets, which appeared in many later editions. By the Bengali polymath, Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), whose collection of poetry, Gitanjali, in its English translation, was largely responsible for his winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. First published in India and the US (Macmillan) in 1916. Attractive colour frontispiece by the prolific Hungarian illustrator, Willy Pogany (1882-1955).
