Item Description
8vo. 9 x 5.75 inches. 167 + [1] pp. + [3] pp. appendix with music score and cast of the first production at the Edinburgh Festival, August 1949. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, in unclipped dust wrapper, with a few small chips at head and tail of spine, which is sunned. Slight sunning at tail of spine and browning and light foxing of front endpaper; otherwise a very good copy. Pictorial bookplate Partly inspired by the work of Euripides, this was the most popular of Eliot's seven plays in his lifetime, although now overtaken by Murder in the Cathedral. Starting as a satire on the English drawing room comedy, it develops into a darker exposition of the human condition and relationships, employing absurdist elements.
