8vo. 7 x 4,5 inches, viii + 260 pp. + [4] publisher's list + 16 pp. publisher's Catalogue (dated January 1853). Bound in original dark green cloth, gilt; boards decorated with blind stamping. Extremities worn, including edges and corners and spine sunned. Front and rear first free blank endpapers have been removed, and flyleaves browned; otherwise a very good copy. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. An early study of the different peoples that have contributed to the ethnological makeup of Britain to the Norman period, including Celts, Romans, Angles, Saxons and Scandinavians. Robert Gordon Latham (1812-88) was a philologist and ethnologist, whose interest in language underpinned his studies on the varieties of mankind, a term he then preferred to that of race.
