100 numbered and captioned black and white stereoscopic photographs, mounted on card, 7 x 3.5 inches each. In grey cloth bound box file. 8 x 7 inches, with gilt titles. Some wear and sunning of extremities, but otherwise a very good clean set. A set, numbered from 1-100, of stereoscopic photographs of the Great War. Some highlights include: Indian Soldiers (9), The Prince of Wales (11), Black Watch and Indian Soldiers (14), Sir John French and Indian Officer (18), Sopwith Camels (68) and King George V (37). The images were taken by Canadian born, H. D. Girdwood (1879-1964), of Realistic Travels, who was with British troops in India when war broke out, but obtained permission the visit the Western Front from July 1915. His images include some posed views and others shot in training. Some of the earlier photographs show British soldiers in their uniform peaked caps and others in steel helmets, which were first introduced in 1915, but were not in general use until later in 1916. The Sopwith Camel aircraft began to enter squadron service on the Western Front from the summer of 1917 (Paul Bond Great War in 3D website).
