12mo. 6.25 x 4.25 inches. x + [ii] + 314 pp. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, boards decorated by blind stamping enclosing circular title block, gilt on front board, with pictorial gilt block on spine A very good clean copy. 1852 school presentation label on front pastedown and 1903 signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated throughout by numerous text figures, Decorated by title page and chapter heading engraved pictorial vignettes. An extensively illustrated textbook of modern science for educational use. The main sections are the Laws of Matter and Motion, Mechanics, Hydrostatics and Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Meteorology Acoustics, Optics, Astronomy, Chemistry, Electricity, Galvanism and Magnetism, with Questions and Experiments at the end. By William Martin (1801-67), described by Oxford Reference as 'hack writer and editor of children's books and magazines.' This third edition cannot be later than 1852 as the school presentation label has this date. Scarce early edition in good condition.
