Small 8vo. 6.75 x 4.5 inches. [4] + vii + [i] + 216 pp. Bound in contemporary patterned faded purple cloth, gilt, with decorative borders to boards and gilt blocks on spine. Extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine. Occasional foxing, but otherwise a very good copy. 1861 gift inscription from author on first free endpaper. Illustrated by engraved frontispiece and decorative title border. A work of Gothic fiction by the Gothic revival architect, John Gibbs (b.1827), who was based in Oxford. He designed Banbury Cross and also worked in Wigan and Manchester. The Ghost of Merton Hall constitutes chapter three of the book. A scarce title.
