The Priory Gate Dover..

DOVER - BURGESS, WILLIAM..

This fully finished work shows the exterior of the gatehouse of the Priory, now a farm, with a view through the gate to the building beyond. At this date the gatehouse still retained its roof although the adjacent walls are falling down. The scene depicts cattle slowly returning, followed by the cowherd on a donkey, passing through the gate and into the yard. The cowherd's boy, standing on a wooden roller by an outbuilding, encourages his dog to speed the cattle on their way and pigeons alight on the gatehouse roof. A delightful pastoral scene.
