4to. 9.25 x 10 inches. 200 pp. Bound in half brown cloth with printed paper spine label over patterned boards, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper. Small stain on lower edge, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated throughout by black and white wood engravings, including frontispiece and by 8 pages in colour. Decorated by by vignettes on preliminary pages, including half title title page and verso, contents page and opening initial. A well illustrated history of British engraving on boxwood from Bewick to William Morris, describing the relationship between artists and engravers. It also examines the successful magazines of Victorian era, including Punch and the Illustrated London News and the colour illustrated books of children's authors like Walter Crane, Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott. Eric de Mare (1910-2002), of Swedish and Huguenot descent, was a notable author on, and architectural photographer of, early industrial buildings in particular.
