FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8.75 x 5.75 inches. xi + [i] + 269 pp. Bound in original black cloth, gilt, in price clipped pictorial dust wrapper, with chips at head and tail of spine, which has a tear. A little wear to board edges and browning of flyleaves; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 23 engraved text figures taken from The Times Report of the Trial of Wm Palmer. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. First edition of an account by Robert Graves of a mid-Victorian cause celebre of 1856. It relates the case of William Palmer, Staffordshire surgeon and racehorse owner, who was condemned for poisoning his friend, John Parsons Cook, after an unjust trial at the Old Bailey.
