Synopsis

Lady annie russell-cotes (1825-1920) was the wife of sir merton russell cotes (1835-1921). this book describes a journey they made from san francisco to japan. sailing 19th september 1885 from san francisco on the ss city of peking. returning to england after spending twenty months travelling the world. visiting: japan, hong kong, ceylon, india and journeying back via aden, through the suez canal, port said,malta and gibraltar. amongst the many souvenirs of their travels, they brought back from japan over a hundred cases forming the first museum in bournemouth called 'the mikado's room'. they joined the newly formed japan society; surrounded themselves with japanese designs and objects in their hotel, the royal bath, and their home, east cliff hall. they gave their home to the town to establish a permanent museum; wrote about their experiences in japan and promoted japanese culture.

The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards and bumping, decal edged pages The contents are tight and clean and the first free endpaper has been inscribed by the author thus: 'To Mr. Mrs. Charles H Mate. With heartiest good wishes at"Aulde lang syne" fom Annie Russell Cotes 01 February 1919 as a little souvenir of our 59th anniversary of our wedding'.
